Elephants have extremely flexible and strong trunks with 150,000 musclefascicles. African elephants have two “gripping fingers” at the tip of thetrunk, whereas Asian elephants only have one.
The trunk of an elephant is as versatile as a Swiss army knife. Not only canthe elephant smell really well with it, it uses it to suck in water, steadyitself, lift trees up high, or spray itself with cool mud. The elephant eats bywrapping its trunk around leaves and grasses, whereby it plucks them from thetree and feeds them into its mouth. A grown animal devours up to 150 kg ofgreen foliage a day. Elephants can even pronounce human-like words with theirtrunks. To do this, they put their trunks in the mouth and place it on thetongue.
