Squoodles: NZ Poi – Maori Patterned Fabric

Children will enjoy learning a new aspect to the Māori culture with theirset of two NZ Maori Poi Red Pattern. This poi features a beautiful fabricpattern, red, black and white string handle and quality workmanship. The ballhas been firmly sewn in place to keep it together during vigorous treatment ofkapa haka performance. This unique pattern was designed by New Zealand Māoriartist Sharmz Waiomio.

The original artwork featured on the piece is called Kotahitanga. Itrepresents unison; the binding together of people from all life paths to cometogether and be one. Waiomio’s work showcases te ao Māori through digitaldrawing. Sharmz is a descendant of Te Arawa, Nga Puhi, Ngati Kahungungu &Ngati Tuwharetoa. “POI” is the Maori word for “ball” on a cord. The POIwas used, many years ago, by the indigenous Maori people of New Zealand toincrease their flexibility and strength in their hands and arms as well asimproving coordination.

Wahine (female) dancers perform the Maori POI, a dance performed with ballsattached to flax strings, swung rhythmically. The POI dance was originally usedby the Maori women for keeping their hands flexible for weaving and by the menfor strength and coordination required during battle. POI are also used as atraining aid for other ancient weapons like the Mere or Patu (Short club).
